Pinterest is all about what impassions you. That makes picking a few top boards about style incredibly tricky. Here are some beautiful choices that offer a glimpse into some very stylish people’s lives and loves.

Polyvore: For anyone who has ever stood in a clothing store pondering an adorable top and wondering what to pair it with, or anyone who’s played a similar game in their own closet, Polyvore is for you. Like a virtual Barbie, the associated website lets you mix and match pieces to create a style collage that you can pin to your own wall. Their Pinterest page hosts 35 boards with over 3,400 pins of celebrity style, accessories, home décor, hair, nails, and, of course, outfits upon glorious outfits. I see more Polyvore virtual outfits on my friends’ boards than any other fashion related pins due to the ability to create completely custom ensembles and see how each piece works together from head to toe. Want to wear it in the real world? Polyvore tells you where you can buy what’s posted on their site, or you can post images of things you find to their “ask” board so other members can help you track items down.


Making It Lovely: The name alone speaks to me. Whether it’s your home, office, wardrobe, or any other aspect of your life, who wouldn’t want to make it lovely? Nicole Balch, the board’s creator, hosts a website dedicated to tracking the progress of transforming her home from, as she says, "so-so" to lovely. Her Pinterest boards also share her personal style picks, so you can dress your home, yourself, and your family. Her images share a plush yet do-able motif that’s unique and somewhat mod, without feeling over the top. Bright colors marry simple, clean lines and designs that often nod to the 50s and 60s – what I can best describe as “trendy-chic”.  There are even boards devoted to the ideas she finds appealing, from inspirational sayings to an eclectic book club. If you connect with her style, you’ll find a wealth of gorgeous images to make it your own.

The Beauty Department: Focusing on hair, makeup and nails, The Beauty Department gives you tutorials to create just about any “look,” from ethereal to bright and glittery.  The style tips on their boards, as well as their originating website will help you create the perfect look for a day at the office or a night on the town. Bonus for fans of Lauren Conrad’s style and beauty books: many of the DIY videos showcase her walking you through the process of putting on individual fake eyelashes or creating the perfect bun.

Merche Grosso: If your taste runs more Euro-modern, you may just fall in love with the images pinned by Madrid-based textile and graphic designer Merche Degrosso. You certainly won’t be alone – she has over 874,000 Pinterest fans following her eclectic posts. With over 7,000 pins ranging from apparel to home design, cute animals to food, you’re sure to find something that strikes your fancy. Even if you aren’t attracted by her art, she has compiled a board called “Most Followed Pinterest Users” detailing over 50 of the most followed pinners in art, design, health, travel, and more. Glitter Guide: Those of us who believe that all that glitters is not gold, but that everything that sparkles is sensational, can’t help but peruse the collection from Glitter Guide.  A few moments spent awash in some of the over 6,000 pins reveals that while there are certainly odes to shine and twinkle, be it glittery glamour, fashion, nails, or décor, the boards are, in essence, a collection of things that bring sparkle to life. From their affiliated website: “We believe a smile is a woman’s best accessory, that sequins are appropriate no matter what the occasion and that some days simply require a glass of champagne. We hope to encourage your creative energy and add “sparkle” to your day!” I love the DIY gems that share adorable ways to add some pizzazz to your home or attire. But who am I kidding? One of the most well-known travel magazines has created one of the most massive Pinterest pages dedicated to all things travel, with 2,500 pins of inspiring images, tips and links to their picks for the best places to visit across the globe. While not always particularly budget conscious, the peek behind the first class curtain is fun while balanced with some great ideas for the rest of us. I didn’t know that “glamping” was a thing, but apparently so. Boards dedicated to just about any major destination are full of breathtaking images, from Shanghai to Charleston to Egypt. Get ready to ooh and ahh your way through page after page of pictures that will make you want to pack your bags.

If you are looking to color coordinate your big day, join the ranks of over 261,000 followers and add this to your list of wedding resources. If you haven’t decided on a color, prepare to be overwhelmed and inspired. One caveat: not all the images contain links that facilitate purchasing the item you see, so while you’ll be given lots of colorful, beautiful ideas for every detail of your wedding, you may be on your own to recreate it.

Many of the pins link to how-to instructions so you can create a celebration that’s distinctly yours without breaking the bank.

Yet it’s impossible to deny the classic beauty artfully displayed throughout the 74 boards. I actually love the “DIY Wedding Details” board with over 100 pins of creative ideas for favors, décor and details. The how-to tips offer anyone with some time the tools to add personal flair to their dream wedding. Exploring past the “fashion-week” pages reveals that Brides offers ideas to bring beauty and grace to any affair, whether it be rustic or romantic, classic or colorful. Turns out decades of creating one of the most iconic wedding magazines around lends itself to an impressive collection of stunning images, awww-inspiring stories, and ideas to help any bride achieve her perfect day.

The holidays are my favorite time of year – gathering with friends and family over special meals, showing you care with gifts, watching the kids explode with excitement over pumpkins, decorated houses, lit Christmas trees… you get the idea. If you’ve yet to explore the wealth of inspiration that is Pinterest, this season is the perfect time to take a tour. Whether you’re a holiday lover like me, looking to build some memorable traditions without going overboard, or a budding Martha Stewart ready to make over your home in festive extravaganza, Pinterest has something for everyone.

Pinterest (http://pinterest.com/) is a social, image-sharing website that functions like a shareable scrapbook. Users “pin” images to a virtual board from the Internet, other user's boards or their own computer, resulting in a collection of images that you can visually scroll through until something catches your interest. Boards are all public, so once you’re a member you can see anything that anyone posts.

The biggest challenge for those new to Pinterest is the overwhelming abundance of material and a relatively weak search function. Search is limited to a single text box where you enter keywords and choose to search Pins, Boards or Pinners. Searching for Pins results in specific images where the “pinner” has listed your keyword in their description of the image or link. Search by Boards for collections of images that pinners have categorized under your keyword. Search by Pinner if there’s someone on Pinterest that you’d like to follow.

When it comes to using Pinterest for holiday inspiration, I recommend that you start with a relatively generic keyword search by either Pins or Boards. For example, search Boards for “Thanksgiving” and you’ll get hundreds of images: crafts to keep the kids busy; beautiful ideas to decorate your home with pre-made printables, nature or artistically presented edible arrangements; and food upon glorious food. My favorites are the ideas to help me connect with the spirit of the holidays with creative family activities, charitable acts or homemade crafts and gifts.
When you find an image that links to something that you like, click through to view the other pins on the same board and then the other images that the pinner has collected on different boards. In many cases, once you find someone with similar taste, style or interests, you’ll end up discovering a wealth of great ideas that they’ve already done to footwork to collect. I’ve also discovered that perusing the boards of others who have repinned something I find appealing often leads me to like-minded individuals and the ideas they’ve found to be appealing.

Once you find inspiration, “repin” the links onto your own boards so that you can have them at hand when you’re ready to get in the holiday spirit. I’ve collected numerous ideas that I can come back to when I want to take some time to do a craft with the kids or make a special themed treat for family or friends. There are many, many things I will surely never get around to, but even if it gives me two or three memorable things to try, it’s a win.

In the same way that leafing through a fitness magazine can motivate you to go for a walk or choose a healthier snack, it’s not the specific project so much as the overall feeling that you can create something cool or beautiful. It gives those of us with little time and creativity the opportunity to find achievable projects while offering those with more crafty skills tools, tips and tricks to take their creations to the next level.

While I’ve grown to love Pinterest, it truly is an Alice In Wonderland-style “rabbit hole.” You start off looking for homemade gifts you can create for the neighbors and before you know it you’ve ventured into DIY garden gnomes or motivational quotes. Time on Pinterest is like dog-years – an hour morphs into five more often than I care to divulge.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to attempt to make marshmallows into snowmen.
